Obstructive sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician using a polysomnogram (PSG), also called a sleep study. During a PSG, the patient will spend a night at a sleep laboratory while connected to monitoring equipment. The PSG study produces a number called the AHI (apnea hypopnea index) that is one of the variables physicians use in determining the level of severity of sleep apnea.
| Level of OSA Severity | AHI |
| Normal | ≤5 |
| Mild | 5-15 |
| Moderate | 15-30 |
| Severe | ≥30 |
